The Regulatory Council of Terra de Mallorca Wine officially recognizes the Escursac variety

El Regulatory Council of the Wine of Terra de Mallorca It has taken a historic step for the island's viticulture: the recovery of the ancient grape variety Escursac It has already been formally included in the specifications of the indication Wine from Terra MallorcaThis means that, for the first time, wines made in Mallorca with this recovered variety will be able to officially label such as Mallorcan wines with Escursac in their composition and varietal mention.

La Escursac It is a native red grape variety from the island of Mallorca, already mentioned in 19th-century local literature, which almost disappeared after the devastation caused by phylloxera at the end of that same century. Thanks to the joint work of winegrowers and researchers, it has been possible to revive it. revive and replant this historic grape.

One of the most important milestones in this long process was the search for virus-free plant material suitable for cultivation. The research team of the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) worked during more than a decade to find and multiply healthy Escursac plants, an essential step to be able to authorize their planting and, subsequently, their official recognition by the wine authorities.

En Tianna Negre We have been committed to this variety since its inception in 2013, when we began to carry out micro-processing with Escursac. We liked the personality this grape offers so much—its vibrant acidity, aromatic profile, and ability to express the Mediterranean landscape—that we decided to plant one hectare on our farm Son Boi, in Consell.

Thanks to this recognition, our wine Quattuor Insulae may to be officially labeled as Vino de la Terra Mallorca in the coming vintages that we launch on the market, thus consolidating its Mallorcan identity and its connection with the recovery of the island's native varieties.

Escursac's recovery is not an isolated story, but the result of many years of working together among wineries, agricultural technicians and institutions, all with a common goal: to preserve and enhance the value of the native varieties that are part of the wine identity of Mallorca.
