When someone visits a winery, their gaze is usually drawn to the same places: the barrels, the amphorae, the tanks. This is logical. These are the spaces where the wine is transformed and where the winemaking process becomes visible.
However, few people pay attention to what happens between the rows of vines. And, frankly, that's where it all begins.
En Tianna Negre We decided long ago that the vineyard shouldn't be "clean" in the traditional sense. We didn't want bare earth between the vines. We prefer to work with vegetable coversespecially with legumes, along with other species that promote soil biodiversity.
It's not about aesthetics. It's a way of working the land.
The role of legumes in the soil
Legumes have a very interesting capacity from an agronomic point of view: They fix atmospheric nitrogen. thanks to the symbiosis they establish with bacteria of the genus Rhizobium in their roots. These bacteria transform nitrogen from the air into forms that plants can use.
In simple terms, this means they help to fertilize the soil naturally.
When these plants are incorporated into the soil as green manureThey contribute organic matter and release some of that nitrogen available to the vines. But the effect doesn't end there. Over time, this practice helps improve several key aspects of the soil:
- Increase in organic matter, fundamental for soil fertility.
- Improvement of the structurefacilitating aeration and root development.
- Increased microbiological activity, with a more diverse community of microorganisms.
- Improved water retention capacity, something increasingly important in Mediterranean climates.
Soil with more life is also more resilient soil.
Living soils facing an increasingly demanding climate
Each year it becomes more evident that the climate is changing. More heat, less rainfall, and more extreme weather events are now part of the agricultural landscape.
In this context, Soil health becomes a key adaptation tool.
Soil rich in organic matter acts like a sponge: retains moisture betterIt buffers high temperatures and helps the vine better withstand periods of water stress. The vine benefits in its vegetative balance, its ability to adapt, and ultimately, in the quality of the grapes.
For a long time, the image of the ideal vineyard was that of a completely clean soil, free of weeds and competition. Today we know that this cleanliness, in many cases, also meant loss of fertility and biological impoverishment.
A living soil, with plant and microbial diversity, is a more balanced soil.
The quality of wine begins beneath our feet
When we talk about identity, territory, or native varieties, we're talking about important things. But if the soil isn't healthy, everything else loses some of its meaning.
That's why, for us, organic viticulture is not just a certification. It's a way of understanding the vineyard and accepting that we are simply one more part of its cycle.
Plant cover crops, green manure, reduced intervention, and care for soil biodiversity are decisions that rarely appear on a label or are explained during a tasting. However, profoundly influence the character of the wine.
We don't know if this is a revolution. Nor do we claim it to be.
It is, rather, a matter of common sense: to take care of the land so that the land can continue to give.
Because, in the end, the most important thing about wine is almost never seen.
And it almost always happens underground.
